Raised beds are a common favourite, as they can provide an attractive focus for a garden and an area that easily maintained,
as they are slightly higher off the ground and of a limited area so are not too daunting.
Quite often they are constucted from former railway sleepers, which can be sourced from quite a few places, and last year they
were selling locally for about 20 each, although they can be sourced for less.
Typically they are 260cm by 25cm by 15cm, so a raised bed made from 3 sleepers, 2 full lenghts and 2 half lengths and filled to the level (assuming they are standing on the 15cm side) would contain approximately 850 litres of soil.
While they are treated and will therefore last a long time, the treatment can also be a curse as well as a blessing. They are saturated with creosote, which is a hugely effective preservative, but also a fairly nasty chemical which should be treated with caution (ie avoid skin contact with the wood and any run-off after rain). It is worth noting that everywhere in Europe that sells railway sleepers to the public, is actually licensed to do so!.
It is possible to buy 'sleepers' that are untreated, but they tend to be more expensive and won't last as long. If they are untreated oak, they will last long enough for most purposes though!
